Fluid Fundamentals: Evidence-Based Insights into Fluid Balance and Health

accent-image

Hydration is a foundational element of overall health and physical performance, yet research shows that only about 40% of the U.S. population meets the National Academy of Medicine’s recommendations for adequate fluid intake. As a personal trainer, you are in a unique position to educate and guide clients on the importance of maintaining optimal hydration - not just for exercise, but for long-term wellness. This session will review current trends in fluid intake and examine the health implications of chronic underhydration. You’ll explore the physiological impact of suboptimal hydration, including its effects on energy, cognition, thermoregulation, and recovery. Importantly, we’ll discuss the spectrum of hydration needs, from the average individual to high-performance athletes. You’ll learn how factors such as activity level, environment, body composition, and sweat rate influence fluid requirements - and how to tailor hydration strategies accordingly. Attendees will gain practical, evidence-based strategies for integrating hydration guidance into client programs, along with actionable tips to support behavior change and long-term adherence.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the fundamentals of body water and hydration status, including factors that influence them and how hydration status is assessed.
  • Explain how underhydration impacts exercise performance, as well as the health and wellness consequences.
  • Learn practical fluid intake strategies that can be used with your clients.
Key Topics Covered
  • Trends and health impacts of hydration
  • Effects of underhydration on physical and mental performance
  • Personalizing hydration strategies for individual needs
  • Practical guidance for promoting long-term hydration habits
